Chapter Seven

“Gracie, are you sure you wouldn’t rather be going to a movie? Or at least out to dinner at The Bistro, or something more romantic than…this.”

Gracie pushed back from the shelf of the hardware store, which also doubled as the auto parts store, having a small section of the back corner stocked with motor oil and antifreeze.

She had been searching through oil filter boxes, mumbling under her breath about the lack of selection of proper parts in Safe Harbor. How was a person supposed to keep an engine in working condition with such little inventory as this?

“Don’t normal engaged couples tend toward more romantic activities on Friday evenings?” Kyle asked, brushing his fingers through the light black curls on his neck and distracting Gracie entirely from what she was doing.

She tried to meet his gaze, to keep her mind on her work, but Kyle wasn’t looking at her at all. Or rather, he wasn’t looking at her eyes. He was staring at her left cheekbone.

She shifted, refusing the urge to reach up and touch the spot he was staring at. Did she have a huge blemish so obvious he couldn’t help but stare?

She decided to change the subject, or at least address the subject he’d brought up earlier. Movies and dinner and all that dating fluff. Locking her wrists behind her, she took a step toward him, closing the distance between them.

“We aren’t exactly a normal engaged couple, now, are we?” she asked wryly, her voice catching on the words as she realized the truth in what she said.

Kyle chuckled, his throat sounding dry. “You can say that again. The two of us definitely defy all the bounds of normalcy.”

He reached out a hand, gently stroking her cheek. When he was satisfied, he held up his index finger, which was blackened with grease. “Who wants to be normal?” he asked quietly. “We’re…special.”

She made a sound that was suspiciously like a snort. “We’re…something.”

He lifted an eyebrow, and she shrugged.

“So, are we going to get your truck fixed tonight, or what?” she asked a little too brightly, turning away and breaking eye contact.

He grinned. “You’re the grease monkey. I’m just along for the ride.”

Gracie continued to astonish Kyle with her hidden abilities and diverse interests. Like tinkering with cars, as a prime example. She could change the oil, flush the transmission and the radiator and change all four spark plugs. Not to mention change a tire, and probably align the things, too, if she had the time and the proper equipment.

Until this year, Kyle had made a habit of bringing his truck to the dealership to get serviced. Sure, he was able to check his own oil, but he didn’t think he could tell a spark plug wire from a fuel line to save his life.

Now, though, the nearest dealership was miles away, so Kyle had originally planned to visit the local Safe Harbor garage for his service work.

Gracie wouldn’t hear of it.

She informed him, in that way she had of
